The Safe, Accountable, Flexable and Efficient Transportation Equity Act of 2005, A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) continues the requirements of the Long Range Transportation Planning for the MPO. As staff to the MPO, the Conservation, Planning & Zoning Department works with citizens, local communities, WisDOT, and consultants on projects that implement the Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) for the Wausau Metropolitan Area.

Every five years the Wausau MPO creates a Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). The Plan identifies the current conditions in the area and identifies and recommends solutions to the issues regarding the deficiencies of the roadways in the metro area.

A new update to the program was completed in September, 2011.
