The Marathon County Conservation, Planning and Zoning (CPZ) Department’s mission is to promote and protect our community’s land and environmental resources to ensure Marathon County has healthy people, economy and environment today and tomorrow. To help achieve this mission, Marathon County has adopted the Private Sewage Systems Ordinance to assure the proper siting, design, installation, and management of private onsite wastewater treatment systems (POWTS) and to assure the timely replacement of failing POWTS.
The CPZ Department currently administers a mandatory POWTS Maintenance Program which applies to all POWTS installed on or after July 1, 1980. Please refer to the brochure below for information about this program.
The CPZ Department is currently developing an expanded maintenance program which will include all POWTS installed before July 1, 1980. The deadline for Marathon County to begin the implementation of this expanded POWTS maintenance program is October 1, 2019. This is being done to not only protect our surface and ground water from pollution, but to also to comply with Wisconsin Statutes and Administrative Code.
In conjunction with this, Marathon County is also developing a POWTS loan program which will provide financial assistance to low income property owners who must replace a failing POWTS.
Further information about the expanded POWTS Maintenance Program and POWTS Loan will be posted as the plans develop.
