Girl using asthma inhalerThe Marathon County Asthma Coalition (MCAC) was developed to help community members better understand what causes asthma and how to best treat it. The MCAC partners with health care professionals, schools, and individuals who can impact the treatment of asthma for individuals in Marathon County. The most recent initiative of the MCAC is the coordination of the School Walkthrough Program.

Asthma is one of the leading causes of school absenteeism. Almost half of all children with current asthma reported missing one or more days of school in the last year to asthma. The goal of the school walkthrough program is to increase school attendance by reducing exposure to environmental asthma triggers found within the school. This can be accomplished by, identifying asthma triggers, implementing low to no cost solutions for eliminating or reducing environmental asthma triggers, and increasing awareness to prevent future exposure to environmental asthma triggers.

If you have asthma, it is recommended that you create an Asthma Action Plan (.pdf), with the help of your provider, that gives specific instructions for early treatment of your asthma symptoms.

Asthma triggers are things, activities or conditions that cause your asthma to flare-up. Common asthma triggers (dust, smoke) can be found in the home but can be easily remedied with the following tips: Avoiding and Controlling Your Asthma Triggers (.pdf).
