The Marathon County Asthma Coalition (MCAC) was developed to help community members better understand what causes asthma and how to best treat it. The MCAC partners with health care systems, schools, and individuals who can impact the treatment of asthma for individuals in Marathon County. The most recent initiative of the MCAC is the coordination of the Asthma Referral Program. The goal of the Asthma Referral Program is to reduce the number of individuals with asthma who go to a urgent care clinic or the emergency department when they are experiencing an asthma attack. Area health clinics and hospital emergency departments have been encouraged to refer patients who have uncontrolled asthma to the Marathon County Health Department. A Public Health Nurse is then able to follow-up with the referred patient to help him/her better understand their asthma triggers and how to best control their asthma.
