The Central Wisconsin Airport (CWA) is a regional non-hub airport located in Mosinee, WI, roughly equidistant between Stevens Point and Wausau. The airport is owned by Marathon and Portage Counties and is governed by the Central Wisconsin Joint Airport Board. It is currently served by three airlines: Delta, United and American and operates 14 daily departures. Delta Air Lines provides flights daily to Minneapolis/St. Paul and Detroit. Both United Airlines and American Airlines provide flights daily to Chicago O’Hare.
CWA first opened in 1969 with 39,000 departing passengers. The airport expects see in estimated 160,000 departing passengers for 2010. CWA completed a concourse renovation in 1998, which equipped the airport with five departure gates and four boarding bridges. CWA will break ground in spring 2011 on a terminal renovation and expansion aimed at increasing operational space, expanding the security check-point, relocating car rentals to their own facility and expanding current parking facilities. The project is estimated at $30 million and will be completed in a three-year process.
CWA was recently awarded a $250,000 Small Community Air Service Development Program grant by the U.S. Department of Transportation that it will use to pursue new air service with a fourth carrier and improve and/or expand current air service with existing carriers. Central Wisconsin Airport was one of 19 recipients from an applicant pool of 74 awarded the grant, and is the only airport representing Wisconsin among the recipients.
