RADON is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that enters our homes from the soil. It is known to increase our risk of lung cancer. A report from the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) on February 13, 1998 confirms the US EPA public health risk of exposure to RADON in the home environment and that RADON causes between 15,000 to 22,000 lung cancer deaths each year. Many areas in Wisconsin have been identified as having a high potential for this important public health concern with RADON levels exceeding the US EPA recommended action level of 4.0 pCi/l (Annual Average Exposure). All homes should be tested, it's easy and inexpensive, and lowering RADON levels can be achieved!
The NCRIC was the first established Radon Information Center in the State of Wisconsin in 1986, and along with 12 similar Centers now located throughout the State, provides RADON information and consultation to residents. Publications are available through these Centers which provide factual information to the reader. The NCRIC is under the guidance of Michelle Schwoch and Dale Grosskurth, professional Environmental Health Sanitarians with over 20 years of combined experience in the Environmental Health field.
